Program Overview
Introduction to the Data Science MSc Program
The Data Science MSc program at Northumbria University is designed to provide students with the relevant skills needed to analyze, synthesize, and manage different types and sizes of data efficiently. This highly practical program has been developed in consultation with partners from industry and the business sector, ensuring that the skills and knowledge gained are directly applicable to real-world scenarios.
Program Overview
The Data Science MSc is a 16-month full-time program that starts in September. It is suited to those who have an undergraduate degree in computing/information sciences, or mathematical and statistical disciplines with applied computing components. The program is ideal for graduates who wish to advance their career by becoming a data scientist. Alternatively, those with a considerable computing background in an industrial/business setting are also suitable applicants.
Course Structure
The program consists of six taught modules covering principles of data science, computational and statistical methods and techniques, programming in Python and R, advanced databases, Big Data in a cloud computing setting, machine learning, and transferable skills in project management and research. Finally, students undertake a major data science project, allowing them to specialize in a subject of interest to them.
Modules
- Research Methods and Project Management: This module covers the full research cycle, from development of the initial concept through to final evaluation and reflection on the research. It includes understanding different research methods and techniques, data and information analysis, and project management skills.
- Big Data and Cloud Computing: Students learn to tackle realistic big data problems using principal machine learning techniques and statistical approaches. This includes hosting big datasets using a cloud service provider, mastering distributed operating systems like Hadoop, and applying advanced statistical processing and machine learning algorithms.
- Principles of Data Science: This module introduces the data science lifecycle, foundations, principles, and fundamental statistical methods. It covers key areas such as question formulation, data collection and cleaning, visualization, statistical inference, predictive modeling, and decision-making.
- Advanced Databases: Students gain a deep understanding of the entire data life cycle, classical database development processes, and approaches to modeling, design, and management of databases. This includes data warehousing, non-traditional data types, systems, and applications, as well as data standards and quality.
- Statistical Programming: The aim is to provide knowledge and practical skills for understanding statistical methods and programming for data science. It combines theoretical and practical approaches, equipping students with programming skills in R for effective and efficient statistical data analysis.
- Machine Learning: This module develops knowledge and skills to tackle realistic machine learning problems using principal advanced machine learning techniques. It covers mathematical foundations, supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning, feature extraction, classification, and clustering techniques, among others.
- MSc Computer Science & Digital Technologies Project: A substantial academic research project at the master's level, where students undertake independent and original research, record their progress, and present their findings in written and oral forms.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should normally have a minimum of a 2:2 honors degree (or equivalent) in a quantitative subject such as computer/information science, engineering, maths, statistics, or a related discipline. International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component.
Fees and Funding
- Full UK Fee: £11,250
- Full International Fee: £21,500 Scholarships and discounts are available, including UK Postgraduate Scholarships, International Postgraduate Scholarships, and an Alumni Discount.
